Program Notes:
Brick Monkey Studios is privileged to be located in Watson Canberra on Ngunnawal Country. I recognise and pay my respect to the traditional custodians the Ngunnawal people.
The purpose of this showing is to share the experiences I’ve had running my screen composition studio by looking at my three latest projects.
I set up the studio in 2020, at the end of the Covid lockdowns. I had made lots of money as a front line worker, working as a news camera operator so sank the cash into acoustic treatment and updating my recording equipment.
I was already getting occasional composition work with a local independent agency Wolf Lab, who I met through my camera work so decided to set up my studio in the same building as them.

Project 1 - DRIFTWOOD
Videos 1 & 2
Driftwood TVC - Simple music for a realestate development, uplifting but not too exiting, while still retaining some depth.
The original version had a melody but it was too crowed by the voice over so was removed and replaced with rising pads on key scenes.
Project 2 - Huawei
Video 3 - Dark and Light, light nostalgic feminine music to match pictures.
There are parallels between the song and the video. They are not direct, the song presents as a pop song chosen for the video, instead of a song composed for the video (as is the case with each of the Huawei songs). This is sometimes referred to as a sense of ready-ness, placing the averts in the body of a popular culture.
Notice the lyric refer to streetlights glowing beneath pale moonlight, while the video is of a a girl reflecting light from her cool new phone.
Also notice the word smile proceeds the shot of the girl smiling, the music and lyrics setting the viewer up for the next shot.
Video 4 - The Jeweller, sophisticated, pseudo euro funk matching a jeweller turning her cool new phone into a handbag(clutch). Again, this song presents with a sense of “ready-ness”, like a pre existing song. I channeled the vocal style of Lovefoxx from the band CSS to write this piece.
Video 5 - The Meeting, smooth, full sounding, exciting but not too anxious music to match with the smart looking venue.
The key scene in this advert is the clash between the main characters dropping their phones, note the syncopated sonar like sound building tension to this point.
Video 6 - The Sculptor, young, popish crooner style music, to reflect a sophisticated artist and his cool phone.
I needed to add an extra bar to this song so added a simple four note melody ending on beat one of the next bar to smooth the transition.
Also note the contrast of looped noisy (kind of sampled beat like) drums behind a sophisticated crooner like song, mixing old sophistication with young and cool.
Project 3 - Ola Dance
Video 7 - Ola Dance FINAL VERSION, this was the final accepted version of many variant for an ad for AI assistant headphones. The music is friendly and exciting.
Video 8 - Ola Dance MINIMALIST VERSION, this version reflects a scifi like minimalist feel, while shifting orchestration between characters to meet their stories.
Video 9 - Ola Dance TV DRAMA VERSION, this version plays out more like a TV drama, the music shifting between style a little more aggressively than the other versions.
Video 10 - Ola Dance IN STORE, this version was cut together by the editor as an inshore user guide.
